What is LibreOffice?
LibreOffice is a free and open source office suite that brings together word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, vector graphics, databases, and formula editing in one unified desktop productivity package. As a mature alternative to proprietary office software, LibreOffice focuses on file compatibility, privacy, and long-term document ownership, giving individuals, businesses, governments, and educational institutions full control over their data without subscription lock-in. The suite includes LibreOffice Writer for word processing, Calc for spreadsheets, Impress for presentations, Draw for diagrams and vector graphics, Base for database front-ends, and Math for formula editing - all built to work together and handle common office formats such as Microsoft Office files and the OpenDocument Format (ODF).
Developed and stewarded by The Document Foundation, LibreOffice emerged in 2010 as a community-driven fork of OpenOffice.org and has grown into one of the most widely used open source office suites worldwide. Its evolution has been guided by an international community of developers, translators, UX designers, quality assurance contributors, and power users who continuously refine the user interface, improve performance, expand file format support, and harden security. Today, LibreOffice is available on major desktop platforms including Windows, macOS, and Linux, is maintained on a steady release cadence, and is backed by a nonprofit foundation focused on long-term sustainability rather than commercial upsell.
