What is OpenOffice?
OpenOffice, formally known as Apache OpenOffice, is a free, open source office suite that bundles word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases, and formula editing into one cross-platform productivity solution. As a mature alternative to proprietary suites, Apache OpenOffice focuses on core desktop office tasks like document creation, number crunching, slide decks, and vector drawing for individuals, schools, nonprofits, and public administrations. It is widely used by cost-conscious organizations that need reliable office software without subscription fees, and is available in many languages for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Originally launched as OpenOffice.org and later donated to The Apache Software Foundation, Apache OpenOffice has evolved through community-driven development into a full-featured office productivity suite. The project is maintained entirely by volunteers and continues to release updates of the 4.x series. Over time it has strengthened support for the OpenDocument Format (ODF), added filters for reading and writing other office formats, and expanded its ecosystem of extensions and templates, while preserving a familiar desktop interface.
